Bhaktapur
Not too far from Kathmandu is the mediaeval city of Bhaktapur which is famed for the three squares that have temples and other religious structures. Entry to the city is not free and the money collected goes into the maintenance of the temples. Often known as the ‘city of culture’, an earthquake in 2015 destroyed huge parts of the city including some of the historically significant temples. However, in the past few years, the city has tried its best to limp back to normalcy. Nevertheless, it is also one of the spots in Nepal that affords excellent views of the Himalayas.
Lumbini
Lumbini is an ancient and beautiful town that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since it is the birthplace of Lord Buddha, it has great historical value and people come from all over the world to experience this site of holiness. The most important site here is the Mayadevi Temple which is where Buddha is said to have been born. Lumbini Garden also has the Bodhi Tree which is a place of serenity and peace. Lumbini isn’t just for those with a spiritual bent of mind, however. Those who enjoy trekking can go for the Lumbini Circuit Trek which takes them around various historical and archaeological sites around the area.
Sagarmatha National Park
For some amazing views of Mount Everest, the Sagarmatha National Park is an excellent spot to visit. This is a popular tourist spot because of the awe-inspiring scenery and the various trekking and hiking trails that can be found here. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and looks out over other peaks too. The wildlife sanctuary is home to numerous rare birds and animals, especially ones you wouldn’t see in most other places such as red pandas and snow leopards. Reaching the park itself is quite the adventure as you can opt to fly to the Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla from Kathmandu, and from there, it’s a two-day trek to Sagarmatha.
